
This lone tulip bloom, out a bit early, was a scant 2 inches lengthwise, on March 26, 2009. I think the insect clinging to it, in the two views below, is a crane fly (Nephrotoma appendiculata), because it has banded stripes on its body. But it might be one of the other species of Nephrotoma found in Kentucky and Tennessee. At the very least, I think one can safely say that it's in the family Tipulidae.
