Historic Farmhouse Adjoining Nashville Zoo

Grassmere Historic Farm

Grassmere Historic Farmhouse

Grassmere Historic Farm, sign with quote from John Ruskin

This historic house was built sometime around the year 1810, using handmade bricks and lumber from the surrounding forest. It stands on the Grassmere acreage which has been donated to the zoo and is currently in process of being restored. The zoo itself moved to the Grassmere site at the time the acreage was donated.

There is an interesting quote from John Ruskin on the sign beside the road leading up to the old farmhouse:

"Old buildings are not ours. They belong partly to those who built them, and partly to the generation of mankind who are to follow us."

Memorial Day, 2008, With the Aid of Masking Tape

Neighbor's Mailbox on Memorial Day

On an early morning walk, the day before the postal holiday in honor of Memorial Day, I came upon these crossed flags, secured to a neighbor's mailbox by masking tape.

A hurried improvisation or merely a humble salute to the memory of U.S. military veterans?

Mid-May Rose

A Mid-May rose, with Rosebuds

Near a neighbor's walk, a rosebush offered fragrant blooms, alongside buds with their calyxes freshly uncurling.

Childhood Reminder

This scattering of buttercups, sometimes called primroses, near a utility pole that I passed on a morning walk, reminded me strongly of the fields in which they grew wild when I was very young.

Buttercups, Sometimes Called Primroses

The heavy pollen at the heart of this delicate blossom would butter your nose, if you happened to bring the flower close, hoping to catch its faint scent.

Second Blooming

Miniature Rose

The miniature rose that arrived in full bloom at Christmas now sits near a kitchen window pane this morning, its single full-blown blossom--no more than a thumbnail wide--coaxed out by the sunny days ahead of this morning's rain.
