Sunny

Tulip Views, 11, March 26, 2009

This lone tulip bloom, out a bit early, was a scant 2 inches lengthwise, on March 26, 2009. I think the insect clinging to it, in the two views below, is a crane fly (Nephrotoma appendiculata), because it has banded stripes on its body. But it might be one of the other species of Nephrotoma found in Kentucky and Tennessee. At the very least, I think one can safely say that it's in the family Tipulidae.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Tipulidae_April_2008-2.jpg for
a photo of Nephrotoma appendiculata.

Where Are the Cedar Waxwings?

Holly with Crabapple March 21 2009

By now the holly should have been stripped of last fall's berries by a migrating flock of cedar waxwings, but the ornamental crabapple is nearing full bloom here at the end of March, and there's no sign of those bright, voracious little songbirds in sight.

St. Patrick's Day Violet

After a cold rainy week, the warm sun has finally coaxed all the violets and dandelions out.
